Well-Versed Quartet for $1

Puzzle Notes

Greetings Friends,

When asked about his writing regimen, author Colson Whitehead says that he tries to finish 8 pages per week. If you do that consistently, after one year you'll have written a book. Well, Mr. Whitehead is a pro, quite prolific and clearly hits his weekly writing goals. He's already won two Pulitzers (for The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys). His most recent book, Harlem Shuffle, has been warmly received and I look forward to reading it soon.

The power of consistency -- writing every day, training for a marathon, or investing via dollar-cost-averaging -- can be very powerful.

I celebrate a modest milestone tonight. This week marks Crossword Nation's 550th publication. Almost 10 years ago we set up shop. and I set out to write a themed puzzle every week. It hasn't been easy, as life throws you sliders, cutters and knuckleballs (mostly knuckleballs) -- but the show must go on. And it's been a thrill connecting with you. Thank you for being here every Monday night to see the curtain rise on a new performance of Little Shop of Horr- . . . er . . . Puzzles.

Now, let's address the matter at hand. One might ask, "Is tonight's puzzle easy or hard?" The answer is: "Yes."

Welcome to Week 550 of Crossword Nation. We humbly invite you to solve "Well-Versed Quartet" as your crossword of the week. Thank you for subscribing and for renewing. Stay safe, dear friends!

Until next time, I remain . . .

Cruciverbally yours,

Liz

Solvers of The New Yorker puzzles: Themeless puzzlers, please check out my latest crossword (a "lightly challenging" diversion, per the editors).

Mini Crossword Aficionados: For a quick solve, please try the Daily Mini Crossword in the L. A. Times. It's free! Simply bookmark and visit daily for a new puzzle.

Recovering Lost Puzzles: If, for some reason, our weekly puzzle email doesn't appear in your mailbox on Monday evenings, no worries -- you can always "re-send" the puzzle to yourself.

But first ....

  1. Please check the Spam folder. Sometimes the Crossword Nation emails are redirected to Spam folders. This can happen after a software or system update. If it's not in the Spam folder, then try Step 2.
  2. Visit the Subscriber Portal and Re-send the Puzzle To Your Mailbox. You can always send the latest puzzle (or any puzzle from our archive) to yourself. Visit here:

Choose the "Resend Puzzle" link at the bottom right of the page. From there, you can choose which puzzle to send to your mailbox!
