Puzzle Notes
Dear Subscribers,
Today's puzzle came about during a recent visit to the Whitney Museum. I'd been looking forward to seeing the Edward Hopper exhibit -- a comprehensive show of his oil paintings, drawings, photographs, correspondence and more. As a fan of Hopper's work, I was in my happy place. The geometry of Hopper's work and his application of light on everyday subjects -- similar to Vermeer -- is remarkable.
The opportunity to examine individual brushstrokes of an artist's work, up close, within inches of a painting -- is the miracle gift of a museum. I intend to return for a few more visits before the exhibit closes in March. If you're in NYC and you love Edward Hopper, please visit the Whitney.
In thinking about brushstrokes, 48-Across came to mind, and then the theme unfolded. It's amazing how museums inspire puzzle themes. Back in the day, when I made puzzles for The New York Times, a visit to the Guggenheim resulted in a Sunday puzzle that honored the museum. How lucky we are to have access to art that inspires us to do other things!
