Puzzle Notes
Dear Crossword Nation Friends,
I grew up in New Jersey which was blessed with many small-town and highway diners. My father worked in a paper mill, in rotating shifts. On his way to work he'd stop by the Triangle Diner for a coffee to go. I always loved that diner because, on occasion, my dad would bring home freshly-baked Triangle Diner pastries. The cheese and cherry danishes were delicious, but my favorites were the three-sided fruit-filled turnovers, called triangles. Flaky, tender, with not-too-sweet apple filling. Sometimes topped with white sugar icing. The triangular shape made it easy to bite into from any corner. Geometric culinary perfection. For Proust, it was the madeleine. For me, it is the apple triangle.
I've since learned that the general term for these pastries is -- turnovers. "Triangles" may be a regionalism, but a sentimental preference may have informed a thematic entry in today's puzzle.
