Solving the High Seas

Puzzle Notes

Dear Citizens of Crossword Nation,

On a bone-chilling, raw, rainy day this week I daydreamed about Greece. Specifically -- a trip I'd made with a chamber orchestra years ago. I'd always been fascinated by Greece and in preparation for the trip I'd read the requisite travel books and Fodor's guides. But nothing prepares you for the mystical geometry of the Parthenon, the tranquil-green olive orchards of Crete, Delphi (no words!), the rooftop saltwater pools of Iraklion or the spectacular views from our little hotel on Santorini.

If you've been to Santorini, you get the picture. This week, on the coldest day in memory, I longed to sit at an outdoor table on a clifftop terrace with panoramic views. Listening to Hatzidakis's Vespers on a cafe's sound system. Wearing capris and sandals. No mask. Sipping wine and sampling a meze platter (extra eggplant dip, please). On Santorini, you're so high up that the cruise ships on the Aegean look like toy boats. Homer's wine-dark Aegean appeared different to this eye -- I'd lamely describe it as an Aegean Blue, a depth of color I'd never seen before or since.

Perhaps we've been daydreaming more than usual lately -- and why not? A bit of escapism is good for the soul. To that end, welcome to Week 497 of Crossword Nation. For your immediate consideration, we present "Solving the High Seas" as your puzzle of the week.

Thank you for joining us and be well, Dear Ones. Until next time, I remain . . .

Cruciverbally yours,

Liz
