Puzzle Notes

Dear Citizens of Crossword Nation,

Greetings! I hope that you’re enjoying some rest and relaxation during this holiday week.

Technically, today’s puzzle could be published a few weeks down the road, but I felt compelled to fast-track this idea. When I read about the characteristics of the puzzle honoree, I couldn’t wait to celebrate. As part of a time-honored and sacred tradition observed in many parts of the world, our honoree (an entity revealed in 57-A) is revered for being:

Honest
Fair
Strong
Serious
Stubborn
Quiet
Determined
Diligent
Dependable
Methodical and quietly-persistent in goal-achievement

What brilliant, magnificent qualities ... and so very needed in the challenging months ahead. As a personal resolution for 2021, I would like to aspire to such qualities.

Our theme is lovingly and punningly celebrated here. All will be clear as you solve the puzzle. (As always, I hesitate to say much more, lest I spoil the gimmick.)

Welcome to Week 500 of Crossword Nation. We invite you to solve "Annual Creature Feature" as our final offering of 2020.

I am deeply grateful for your support over the years. We celebrate our 500th week of cruciverbal cavorting because of you, our subscribers! May you and yours enjoy Health and Happiness in 2021!

Cruciverbally yours,

Liz
