Puzzle Notes

Greetings Friends!

There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them” ~Ray Bradbury

An amazing thing happened during this pandemic – book sales increased! Have you been reading more these days? I found myself visiting the “someday” books – titles I’d been planning to read, but hadn’t gotten to.

After I started making crosswords, I noticed a change in my reading habits. I became a s-l-o-w reader. These days I’m compelled to highlight (in pink), underline (in purple) and check any word or phrase that would make a promising crossword entry. The margins of Ann Patchett’s “The Dutch House” contain sketched-out puzzle themes and rough diagrams. Yaa Gyasi’s “Homegoing” took me forever to read, as almost every page contains a “note to self.” “Middlesex” – by Jeffrey Eugenides – is so dog-eared and marked up, I hesitate to leave it out in the open. No one wants to borrow my books anymore, as they're defaced with cruciverbal graffiti.

Today’s puzzle is inspired by a "someday" book I’d had on my shelf for years. It’s a fantastic read, and a joy to weave into a puzzle.

Cruciverbally yours,

Liz
