Puzzle Notes

Dear Subscribers,

Yesterday I fell victim to drive-by punning.

While shopping for soup veggies at our local market, I stopped at the onion stalls, trying to decide among the many onion varieties on display. A couple of firefighters from our local engine company -- also shopping for provisions -- walked up to the stalls. One of them appeared perplexed and asked: "Say, does anyone here know which onions are the vidalias?"

I pointed to a basket of beautiful vidalia onions, saying "Here they are." Then he said, "Wow, you really know your onions!"

We all laughed and I admitted to have fallen for the corny "onion identification" trick. (Oh, I fell for it -- hook, ladder and sinker.) The entire incident took 30 seconds, after which we all went our separate ways, but I was still chuckling to myself for the rest of the day.

Speaking of punning and wordplay, we hope that today's puzzle fills the bill. Welcome to Week 610 of Crossword Nation. We invite you to solve "Der Crossword" as your diversion of the week.

Thank you for solving and be on the lookout for those drive-by punsters!

Until next time, I remain . . .

Cruciverbally yours,

Liz
