Hey Diddle, Diddle -- A Halloween Riddle!

Puzzle Notes

Dear Friends,

A bittersweet memory of my childhood revolves around that Halloween when you realize (or some parental figure tells you) that you're too old to go trick-or-treating anymore. I was already tall for my age and there was no way I could hide behind a mask and costume and pass myself off as an age-appropriate trick-or-treater. Instead, I would be charged with giving out treats. Not fair!

I didn't know then that, years later, Halloween would become an "adult" thing -- with parents often spending more money and time on costumes than their kids. I'm not into Adult Halloween myself, but when the holiday falls on a Tuesday -- Crossword Nation publication day -- I dress up as the horrifyingly-grotesque Crossword Industrial Complex and rustle up holiday groaner . . . er, treat. One must rise (or fall, in the case of punning) to the occasion.

Welcome to Week 648 of Crossword Nation. We hauntingly welcome you to solve "Hey Diddle, Diddle -- a Halloween Riddle!" as your diversion of the week. Happy Halloween!

Cruciverbally yours and with respect,

Liz
