"... And With A Cherry On Top!"

Puzzle Notes

Dear Crossword Nation Friends,

As summertime approaches, one thinks about lazy days, picnics, beach reading and ice cream. Specifically, ice cream sundaes.

As a kid, I'd heard about ice cream sundaes long before I ever had one. One July my best friend Jean's older sister (Carol) took us for a drive. Carol, whom we idolized, was a big shot and a decade older than Jean; she had a fancy job at Revlon and would surprise us with shiny samples of blush, eye shadow and mascara. Carol decided it was time that Jean and I -- introverted teenagers -- visit a real ice cream parlor. Road trip! She took us to Buxton's on Route 9 in NJ, where they specialized in all manner of ice cream sundaes. But their Main Event was the "Big Bux" -- a bucket containing 8 scoops of ice cream, hot fudge sauce, fruit chunks, nuts, whipped cream and everything under the sun. Part of the fun for Carol was to see our faces when we were served -- with the usual Buxton's fanfare -- two massive buckets of ice cream. The momentary humiliation melted away as we dove into our Big Bux sundaes. Needless to say, we couldn't finish them, but we left the ice cream parlor with happy adolescent stomach aches. We'd vow never to eat ice cream again ... until next time, of course.

Do you remember your first ice cream sundae?
