Puzzle Notes

"I have come to the conclusion that politics are too serious a matter to be left to politicians" ~ Charles de Gaulle

Greetings Crossword Nation Friends,

I grew up in a working class home.  My mother worked in a dress factory and my father worked shifts in a paper mill.  On Sundays, we'd all dress up to go to church.  "Sunday Best" clothes were reserved for church and important events like -- weddings, funerals, graduations and ... Election Day. Having emigrated from a country were general elections were non-existent (or conducted with one unopposed candidate), my parents dressed up when they were given the opportunity to vote in U.S. elections. On Election Day, my father hit the polls in his best "church" suit. My mother would cast her ballot wearing a Jackie Kennedy-inspired trapeze wool coat that she sewed for herself.

To us kids, the message was clear -- voting was serious.  Election Day was special. The right to vote was regarded with reverence and gratitude.

This election year, as in years past, I had the opportunity to vote by mail. But since our polling center is a just a few blocks away, on Tuesday I'll dress up and walk over to cast my ballot. Tradition!

Coincidentally, today's puzzle was inspired by a book about politics -- I think you'll remember it. We hope you'll have fun with our riff on the title!
